First of all, thank you to everyone who nominated someone for our “Who Deserves a Garden?” giveaway! Reading through your submissions had our team in tears.
We wish we could give away hundreds of gardens, but we are so excited to announce who gets them this year!
Two (2) winners received $500 dollars worth of Chippewa Valley Growers plants and gardening products. The people who nominated them also receive a $200 dollar CVG gift card!
Jose is a kind and generous man who loves his family and makes friends wherever he goes. Jose loves animals and believes strongly in the healing power of human-animal connections. Jose has been a part of the Chippewa Valley community for over 20 years.
Many people have probably had the please of meeting him on one of their dinning experiences. Jose is always willing and eager to give a helping hand and sees the good in everyone he meets. Jose and his family have worked hard to make their country home a reality so their kids can enjoy the country life. Jose came to the US, enrolled in English classes, and quickly became connected and involved with the community. He has an infectious and loving personality sure to brighten anyone’s day.
Jose supports his wife’s love of gardening. Together they curate a veggie garden that supports their family, their extended family and community, and Jose’s animals. Like many multicultural families, Jose has recently had to support his family through multicultural adversity challenges. This has taken a toll on the family’s mental health and given them some concern for their safety. Jose and his wife could really use some generosity of spirit.
He recently asked me if I knew of any free programs where he could get some trees to plant on his property to help stabilize the land and proved shade and housing for the animals (wild and his own). I think a gift of trees and a variety of vegetables from Chippewa Valley Growers would really help to lift Jose’s spirits and help him and his family see that there are generous people who care about families like his; even when it feels like people are against you for the things you cannot change about yourself. Jose would be much too humble to ask for a gift like this from Chippewa Valley Growers (or anyone for that matter) so I think he deserves a helping hand in supporting his family.
“Roger is the original chairman of St. Joe’s “Green Team”… (Reverence for the Earth Team.) In 2012 they did a community needs assessment and it was determined from the study that 14% of Chippewa County residents were considered food insecure. From that study they established St. Joseph’s Hospital Community Garden with Roger taking the lead for the past 11 years. Roger is in contact with a number of Chippewa County Food Pantries and he has made sure that all donated fruits and vegetables from those gardens get to those in need of those products.
Roger usually does the delivering, as well as helping with the gardening. Various community volunteers/groups raise items in those gardens. Garden space is also made available to those in need of food to raise their own fruits and vegetables. There is no way to know how many people have benefited from the program, but Roger estimates it is well in the hundreds.
In the first year, 2013, they produced 102 pounds. It has steadily gone up over the years with 2022 producing 3,873 pounds of food. Since its start in 2013 they have produced 22,661 pounds of food, which translates to 11.3305 tons. Over the years they have also built a shed with garden tools, provided water for the gardens, planted apple trees and built a fence to keep deer and other wildlife from grazing on the gardens. All under Roger’s guidance and hands-on help. Roger also has made numerous presentations to local groups to promote St. Joe’s Community Garden, complete with green overalls, straw hat, and assorted vegetable sticking out of his pockets. This is his passion to provide food for those experiencing food insecurity. It is my pleasure to nominate Roger for the “Who Deserves A Garden” Award
