Knowing which Christmas tree type fulfills your decorating desires is essential info for the holiday season. You need a tree that’s tall, green, and lush that smells like Christmas (and doesn’t look like it was picked by Charlie Brown). Check out the list below to see which tree best scratches your Christmas itch.

  1. BALSAM FIR: If you want to fill your home with an authentic holiday scent, this is the tree for you. It boasts an excellent needle retention rating and is also commonly used to make wreaths.
  2. DOUGLAS FIR: This guy is one of the most beloved by #TeamRealTree – mainly due to its ideal pyramid shape. The needles tend to be softer to the touch and have a sweeter scent than other trees. Note: the Douglas Fir requires a consistent source of water. Otherwise, those needles will start to drop quickly.
  1. FRASER FIR: If you have years worth of decorations that need a place to be showcased, the Fraser Fir is a great choice. Even though the needles are soft, the branches are strong and can adequately support your cherished family keepsakes.
  2. WHITE SPRUCE: Contrary to its name, the color of this tree’s needles tend to be more on the blue/green side. Be warned though, the needles’ scent can be a bit off-putting.
  3. NORWAY SPRUCE: If you long for a tree that looks like it should be at Rockefeller Center, this is the one. It’s long sweeping branches give it a wispy, whimsical look. As with the Douglas Fir, the needles are quick to fall if not well watered.

In the end, no matter which real tree you pick, you’ll be helping local businesses and adding a little extra oxygen to your home. Plus, real trees are awesome bonfire starters to (safely) kick off the new year!
