Ah, it’s April! There isn’t much we don’t like about the fourth month of the year. For us, it is the official start of us opening our doors to the community and helping everyone kick-off their gardening season.

National Garden Month

We kick it off with a bit of April fools, throw in CVG’s opening day and declare it National Gardening Month.

National Garden Month originally started as National Garden Week. Through an official decree in an effort to show appreciation to the efforts of gardeners and increase the education of the gardening process, President Regan issued the first proclamation in 1986.

In 2002, the National Gardening Association took claim to the dedicated time and extended it to a full month of celebrating gardening because one week to show plant love just isn’t enough.

Growing Miss Daisy’s

Every month has a flower associated with it. Unsurprisingly, the sweet face of the daisy (Bellis perennis) is the one paired with the sweet month of April. These hardy flowers are best-associated with spring as well because of their ability to flourish in cooler temperatures. Whether it’s the classic white petal, yellow face combination or one of the other dozens of different colors found in the species, the daisy is perfectly paired with the month-long recognization of spring.

Day Trip to a Garden

A great way to celebrate National Garden Month, whether still sloshing through snowbanks or not, is to visit a local garden. A quick trip to Wausau’s Monk Botanical Gardens can be a great way to get inspired for your own garden. From a stroll through the Wildflower Woods to experiencing the seed-to-table process in the Kitchen Garden, to a childhood adventure for all ages in the Treehouse, you’ll want to celebrate National Gardening Month every month here.

Decorate on the Dirt

While the ground of your garden may not be ready to receive the roots of our plants, your planning should still be in full swing. Aside from deciding what plants you want to go where, how about a little Joanna Gaines inspired decorating as well? Think about how you might incorporate spaces into your garden for seating to enjoy the flora. Or consider how you could incorporate different textures into the garden such as metal garden beds versus wood or cedar.

We are as excited about April as a daffodil ready to sprout and can’t wait to enjoy the kick-off of National Garden Month with you!
