If you’ve always wanted to start a flower garden, but you didn’t know how or where to start, we’ve got your back. Here are some tips to help you kickstart your new favorite hobby.

PLANNING

Okay, maybe “planning” isn’t the right word. It sounds way too formal. Instead, let’s refer to it as “dreaming.” Grab a piece of paper and sketch out your yard. Then, mark some spots where you’d like to add flowers.

No yard? No problem. Survey your space for spots where you can display a few garden boxes or planters.

SELECT

Next, note how much sun is available in the areas where you want to plant your flowers. Knowing if those spots get full sunlight, partial sunshine, or mostly shade will help you know which flowers will flourish.

Also, be aware of how much space you designate for growing. Different plants have different spacing requirements.

PLANT

Now’s when the dreaming becomes reality! Before you dig, lay out your flower selections according to each flower’s spacing specifications. This will give you an idea of how they will look when planted and how much space you’ll need.

Once you get the flowers in the ground or pot, make sure to give it just enough water to get settled in but not so much that it washes away the new soil and nutrients.

MAINTAIN AND ENJOY

Once you have all your new flower babies nestled in their flower beds, take good care of them. Pull pesky weeds. Lay down mulch around the flowers to keep moisture and nutrients at the roots. Keep an eye out for pests. And add fertilizer at least once a month. Then, sit back and enjoy the sights and smells in your own backyard!
