This past year has brought back many of life’s simpler traditions: devouring books, slaying puzzles, daily walks, and baking bread. (Who else was on the hunt for yeast this time last year?) It was also the perfect time to revive the practice of secretly sharing little bits of kindness and joy. We invite you to join the May Day revolution!

But before we ask you to hop on our old-school, flower-toting bandwagon, allow us to first answer the biggest question:

What is May Day?

In the 19th and 20th centuries, May Basket Day commemorated the changing of seasonal tides between the lion and the lamb on the first day of May.

One would observe the occasion by secretly leaving a basket on the door handle or front step of a neighbor, friend, love interest, etc. The basket would be filled with beautiful spring flowers, sweet notecards, delicious candies, and other small trinkets.

It was the loveliest version of ding dong ditch.

And then it faded away.

But we are feverishly campaigning for its return because – regardless of what this past year has doled out – we crave opportunities to secretly sneak some baskets of bliss onto the front porches of neighbors and friends.

You in? Sweet! Here are a few ways to join the fun:

May Day Baskets

Don’t get too hung up on the “basket” term. Think of it more as a “vessel.” Flowers can be delivered in various ways – in a vase, a pot, or even an upcycled spaghetti sauce jar. You can also wrap them in paper. Almost anything will work.

May Day Notes

Include a short note with your secret delivery to let them know that someone is thinking of them. You don’t have to be a poet. A quick “Happy May Day” will do the trick. If they don’t know about this tradition, they will spend the rest of their day going down the May Day rabbit hole (aka Google).

May Day Participation Invite

The more, the merrier! Invite others to join the fun! Send this article to your friends and family and ask them to participate in the May Day revival. This is why social media was invented!

May Day Receiver

Who will be the recipient of your special May Day delivery? Neighbors, friends, and family are always at the top of the list. But don’t stop there. Spread the love to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, police stations, fire departments, etc. Let them know they are appreciated!

Help us fan the flames of this much-needed, perfectly-timed, socially safe revival! Need some more gift ideas? Come see us! We’d love to be a part of your special someone’s special (May) day.
